GeCl4 is used as a doping agent in the core of a silica glass optical fibre to increase the refraction index, allowing guidance of optical data through the fibre. To support optimal transmission a high purity GeCl4 is critical. Low concentrations of hydrogen bonds and metallic impurities are our standard.

Packing and Logistics
GeCl4 is a corrosive material which requires specialised packing. Besides glassware bottles for small volumes, Umicore offers stainless steel containers up to 400 kg with specially designed 3-valve system, preventing any contamination during transport or usage. Flexible and effective logistics guarantee a smooth supply. Recycling of germanium is a key to the optical fibre business, due to the low incorporation yield into the fibre.
Recovering germanium from production wastes besides direct cost savings, offers advantages such as improved security of supply and reduced sensitivity to the germanium price variation.
